But the underlying structural problems — confessionalism, Hezbollah's weapons, the debt-accumulation economic model — survived the revolution intact.

Beirut, August 4, 2020. It is 6:08 in the evening. The port of Beirut is busy with late-afternoon work. In Warehouse 12, a fire has been burning for about an hour — workers believe it started during welding operations in an adjacent building.

At 6:07, a small explosion. Firefighters are already heading toward it.

At 6:08, Warehouse 12 detonates.

The blast is felt in Cyprus, 240 kilometers away. In Turkey, 900 kilometers away. Seismographs in Greece record the shock. The mushroom cloud rises over Beirut visible from satellite. In the port, the blast crater is large enough to be a lake. In the Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikhael neighborhoods, buildings that have stood for a century collapse or lose every window, door, and wall facing the sea. Three hundred thousand people are made homeless in minutes.

Two hundred and eighteen people are killed. Seven thousand are injured.

The cause: 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate — a compound used to make fertilizer and bombs — stored in the warehouse since 2014. At least ten Lebanese government officials had received written warnings about it over six years. Not one had acted.

Today's Core Question: How did a country that survived fifteen years of civil war and a foreign occupation end up collapsing from within — through a combination of political paralysis, financial fraud, and catastrophic neglect?
