Two Crowns

Santa Fe, on the plain west of Granada, in the spring of 1492. The town is barely a year old. It went up in 1491, after fire destroyed the royal camp. It was laid out as a cross inside a square of new walls.

It exists for one purpose: to sit outside Granada until Granada gives up.

In a single season, three pieces of paper come out of this small town and the palace it is besieging.

The first is dated 25 November 1491. It promises Granada's Muslims their religion, their mosques, their property and their own judges. The promise is in writing.

The second is dated 31 March 1492. It orders every Jew in Castile and Aragón to accept baptism or be gone by the end of July.

The third is dated 17 April 1492. It promises a Genoese sailor named Christopher Columbus a noble title, a governorship, and a tenth of whatever he finds across the ocean.

A promise of tolerance. An order of expulsion. A contract for a world nobody had reached.

Five months, one small town, the same two rulers.

Except the middle document did not carry the same two signatures. It was issued twice: one version for Castile, signed by both monarchs, and another for the Crown of Aragón, signed by Ferdinand alone.

That detail is not a clerical quirk. It is the shape of everything Isabella and Ferdinand built, and the shape was set by a wedding twenty-three years earlier.

Today's Core Question: If Isabella and Ferdinand ruled one country, why did expelling the same people from it take two separate decrees?

Tomorrow in Day 3: Ferdinand dies, and in January 1516 a fifteen-year-old from Flanders who speaks no Castilian inherits every crown at once. Then a mountain of silver in the Andes starts paying for wars across half of Europe, and every bill lands inside one kingdom's legal container. When that kingdom runs dry, the monarchy cracks along the seams that 1469 left open.
